There's no need to rush to get the most out of Central Otago. Take time to enjoy everything there is on offer - the stunning scenery, the rich history, world-class wineries, great food and friendly locals.

Central Otago is home to four incredible trails. Each trail is a completely different experience and there will be more great trails to come.


Alexandra and the wider region are criss-crossed with smaller cycle and mountain bike trails suitable for the adventurous thrill seeker or leisure cyclist. Trails vary in length and difficulty to sure the time you have available.

New Zealand's Original Great Ride

This epic trail led the way for New Zealand's Great Rides. Following the old railway route from Clyde to Middlemarch, the Otago Central Rail Trail covers the heartland of Central Otago. With its epic landscapes, heritage hotspots and incredible Kiwi hospitality, the Otago Central Rail Trail has something for everyone. This family friendly trail spans 152 kilometres across the region.

Discover Another World

With it's steep and dramatic landscape, it's no wonder why the Roxburgh Gorge has been called the New Zealand Grand Canyon! Following the Mighty Clutha River from Alexandra to Roxburgh, The Roxburgh Gorge Trail offers a back country experience like no other! Break up the ride with a scenic 13km jet boat ride between Doctors Point and Shingle Creek.

Clutha Gold Trail

A Journey of Discovery

The Clutha Gold Trail meanders with the Mighty Clutha River so it provides a smooth ride full of variety, adventure and incredible landscapes. With lots of neat spots to stop along the way, the Clutha Gold Trail takes you through the Teviot Valley from Roxburgh Dam right through to Miller's Flat, and then onto the gold mining town of Lawrence.

Lake Dunstan Trail

Flaunting the Best of
Central Otago

Central Otago's newest cycle and walking trail links Cromwell, Bannockburn and Clyde and is the epitome of Central Otago. With the bright blue waters of Kawarau and Dunstan contrasting against the vineyards, landscapes and schist slopes of the Cairnmuir mountains, it's easy to see why this trail is so popular already!
